Author: "Billy Joel: The Definitive Biography" Will Show Piano Man "Really Is Th

Crown Archetype/Random HouseIn 2011, Billy Joel pulled the plug on his autobiography,The Book of Joel, citing concerns that it was being marketed as a "salacious tell-all."  But  much of the material destined for that book is being released on Tuesday, in the form of a new book called Billy Joel: The Definitive Biography.  The author is the same guy who worked with Billy on the scrapped book, and he says this new one will confirm what the public already knows about the Piano Man: he's a decent guy.Speaking to Newsday -- Billy's hometown paper -- author Fred Schruers says, "There's a reason he's...very well loved. I don't think the public really wants to know the bad stuff, though it's in there. They have their imaginings about Billy, and some of them are reflected by the reality. He's had his bumps. It's very hard to say this without sounding too Pollyanna-ish, but he really is that good guy that everyone wants him to be."Schruers says the idea to write a biography of Billy came about in 2012, when he ran into the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, and the two came to a "handshake agreement" that Schruers could proceed.  Not only that, but Billy gave Schruers permission to use all the material that he'd gathered for The Book of Joel for the project.  "'I'll help you out' was his phrase," Schruers tells Newsday.  The author ended up using nearly 100 hours of interviews he'd done with Billy, as well as interviews he'd done with members of his inner circle over the years. As for why Billy scrapped The Book of Joel in the first place -- even returning a seven-figure advance -- Schruers said the project simply came at a bad time in the singer's life."I don't think he hated what we had done together," says Schruers. "But when your dad dies and you're going through a divorce, you're in hip pain and you're pretty emotionally battered, it's not something you want to talk about all the time in interviews. You want more of a peak moment to put that book out."Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Taylor Swift Visits "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" to Plug New Album, Perform Two Songs

Big Machine RecordsTaylor Swift appeared on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! Thursday to plug her new album and perform two songs at an outdoor stage in front of nearly 15 thousand fans who lined Hollywood Boulevard outside Kimmel’s studio. The 24-year-old singer/songwriter told Kimmel she’s “more confident” about this album than she’s been about any of her previous releases. Taylor said it’s a “really nice feeling” to have but added, “it’s almost like you’re releasing this thing into the world that you spent two years with, and it’s just been mine for two years and now it’s everybody elses.”Taylor joked that it’s like she’s "sending it off to college."Earlier in the week, Kimmel had fans submit questions for Taylor via Skype, and he read one of them on the air. A fan asked if all our memories were erased, but Taylor could pick one song from 1989 that we all would remember, which would it be and why? Swift said she would choose the song “Clean,” the last track on the album.  She wrote it with British singer/songwriter Imogen Heap.  Taylor said of the tune, "It's just a song that's really special to me and it's been one that kind of everyone is really talking about."  Taylor told Kimmel, "I think it's a song that might help people go through things."Kimmel also told the story of Taylor showing up at the studio in 2005 when she was 14 years old to try to get on the show.  “Taylor came to our show with her mom and her guitar, and somehow she got a hold of the guy who books bands here, Scott Igoe, and she asked if she could play a song for him,” Kimmel recalled.Kimmel said Igoe told Taylor she wasn't allowed in the show’s green room because they served alcohol and he threw her out.Flash forward to Thursday night: Kimmel announced on the show that he’s decided to make it up to Taylor by having security guards “toss” Igoe, who still works for Kimmel, out of the building.  Later in the show, Taylor performed her hit "Shake It Off," and the song "Out of the Woods."1989 arrives Monday, October 27, the same day Taylor appears on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and makes her debut later that night as a mentor on The Voice.Follow @ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Listen to Bette Midler Sing TLC's "Waterfalls"

Warner Bros. RecordsThe notion of Bette Midler covering a #1 hit by the '90s R&B supergroup TLC sounds like an extremely bad idea...but it turns out the Divine Miss M's version of "Waterfalls" is a lot better than you'd think.Bette recorded the song for her upcoming album It's the Girls!, a tribute to great girl groups.  She's turned the song -- a cautionary tale about the dangers of both drug dealing and of having casual sex during the height of the AIDS epidemic -- into a slow, mournful piano ballad.  She's also cut out the song's rap interlude, which was originally performed by the late Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes."Waterfalls" was #1 for seven weeks in 1995 and received two Grammy nominations.  It's considered TLC's signature song.On It's the Girls!, Bette also tackles songs made famous by The Shirelles, The Ronettes, The Chiffons, The Supremes, Martha & the Vandellas and more.  The album's due November 4.Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

On "Ellen," Taylor Swift Talks Irrational Fear of Sea Urchins, Reveals How to Re

Trae Patton/NBCTaylor Swift appears on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday to discuss her new album and her debut Monday night as a mentor on The Voice, but in a series of advance clips, she also discusses her deepest, darkest fears, both of which are somewhat irrational. The first of Taylor's irrational fears has to do with sea urchins.  When Ellen tries to argue that sea urchins are just sitting there minding their own business, Taylor counters, "They're sitting there waiting to completely injure you!""OK, like, if you're in the Caribbean, you're like, 'This water's so beautiful, it's amazing,' and you're walking -- it's clear water -- you can't see a sea urchin's right there!  And then you step on one, and it has barbs that go into whatever it touches, and then you have to go to the emergency room and it has to be surgically removed!"Taylor continues, attempting to justify her fear.  "You could lose your foot. You could lose your hand. You could lose your hand trying to get it off of your foot!"Taylor also reveals that she is afraid of being framed -- by persons unknown -- for something terrible.  She feels that there are "so many people" out there who'd want to frame her. Explaining why she feels this way, she tells Ellen, "I think the dream and the nightmare of being framed comes from, like, I could do nothing wrong -- I could sit in my house with the cats all day -- and somehow, there could be an article about me buying a house in a place I've never been, or dating a guy I've never met." "So, then you take it a step further, and in nightmare world, it's being framed for murder," she finishes.During her interview, Taylor also revealed that when she was a mentor on The Voice, she got to learn all the coaches' weaknesses.  She says Adam Levine's weakness is songs from Broadway musicals -- not that he has a weakness for them, but that he hates them so much, you could use them as a weapon against him."If you sing songs from Rent, you can actually render Adam Levine helpless on the floor," she explains.   Bursting into a few bars of "Seasons of Love" from Rent, Taylor adds, "You have to do a theater voice, and he's just like 'Ahhhh!' and he can't even run away, he's so weak!" "Wow, so ladies, if you ever wanna catch him...." replies Ellen, getting huge laughs.Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Adam Levine Calls His Wife "The Best Dressed Woman Out There"

Christopher Polk/NBCAdam Levine's wife Behati Prinsloo is a model, so of course she's going to have some sort of style.  But Adam thinks that when it comes to getting fashion right, there's nobody who can touch her.During an interview with Refinery29 about the newest holiday designs for his clothing line, The Adam Levine Collection, the Maroon 5 singer was asked to name the best fashion advice his wife ever gave him.  "Well, I’m...really lucky because my wife happens to be — in my opinion — the best dressed woman out there," he says. "Obviously, I’m biased, but I just feel like she’s very creative, inventive, [and has] good taste. I’d be silly not to try to recreate that for the line."Asked to reveal what outfit he wore when he first met his future in-laws, Adam says, "Oh God, I don’t remember. If I had to put a bet on it, I’d say it was a T-shirt and jeans. I don’t remember what happened yesterday, so unfortunately I can’t remember too specifically.”  Still, he says that in general, when you're meeting the parents, you should go subtle, not sexy. However, when asked to recommend a specific outfit that fits the bill, Adam wouldn't take the bait, responding, "God, I don’t know. What I think is passable and what other people think is passable are probably very different. I don’t think it makes a difference as long as it’s not revealing.”Overall, Adam says his vision for his clothing line is the same as it's been since he started it:  "Super-simple, classic things that I’ve always loved for men and...that I think that women would really like."  He adds that he's "not trying to push the envelope too far, because that’s not what I do.""I don’t wake up in the morning and put on a Versace gown," he adds. "Although that would be funny if I did.”Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Annie Lennox Takes on "Evocative" Standards with New Album "Nostalgia"

Blue Note RecordsIn the '90s, Annie Lennox released Medusa, a disc of cover versions of pop and rock songs from the '60s, '70s and '80s.  But on her new album Nostalgia, Annie goes back much farther than that, tackling legendary standards from the Great American Songbook.  It's something she says she never would have even considered doing back in the '80s, when she was topping the charts as a member of Eurythmics."I would have had absolutely no interest in doing it," she tells ABC News Radio. "It would have been inappropriate. At that time, in the eighties, Dave Stewart and I were creating music with Eurythmics that was very ground-breaking and, we felt, very fresh and new -- innovative, in fact.  I would never've taken a backwards step into a genre like jazz. But now, it just feels so appropriate."Annie decided which songs to include on the album by scouring YouTube and finding songs that struck a chord with her.  "Usually, when I hear a song, I'll know within the first few seconds whether it's going to hold interest for me," says the Scottish singer. "By and large, these songs all have those qualities in them that, right from the moment that you first hear them, they continue through."Speaking about the classics she ended up tackling, like "Georgia on My Mind," "God Bless the Child," "Summertime," "The Nearness of You" and "I Put a Spell on You," Annie explains, "They have a narrative.  They have a certain sort of shape.  They tell stories.  They create something evocative.  Each one is like a little journey."Because she's not a trained jazz singer, Annie says she was able to put her own spin on these songs by digging deep into their musical roots."What I did discover was that, underneath, the real core of jazz, lies blues," she explains. "And, of course, I've come from R&B and soul music that has influenced me since I was a young person...So, I kind of colored a great deal of the songs with blues, and that informed me a lot in terms of my approach to the songs."Annie doesn't think it's odd that at this stage in her career, she would attempt a musical genre she's never sung before.  "I am a person who likes to sing to my own tune, literally," she tells ABC News Radio. "I like to explore and chart new territory and push my own boundaries in a way.  And I don't think that singers necessarily all have to be hemmed in to one label and one type and to say, 'Well, because you sing in one style that doesn't mean that it cancels out every other style.'  I have very eclectic taste in music."She says her fans seem to like the direction she's gone on Nostalgia, too. "I think people are charmed by it actually, more than anything else," she says. "It's something new and different for them."Of course, the big question now is whether or not Annie will tour in support of the album.  She doesn't particularly like the grind of being on the road, and then there's the issue of how she'd mix these standards with her past hits. That's why, she says, she just hasn't made up her mind yet."Everyone is asking me if I'm going to tour," she sighs. "And, I mean, I'm just not going to think about it until we come up to the end of the year and I'll take a break and then I'll consider what the next step should be -- whether I should tour or not." Nostalgia, which is available on vinyl and on CD, is in stores now.Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Sting Talks Tantric Sex in Advance Clip for "Inside the Actors Studio"

Tony Behar/NBCUSting is not only a singer and songwriter, he's also an occasional actor, having appeared in quite a few movies over the years.  But during his appearance this Thursday night on the series Inside the Actors Studio, he ended up having to talk to host James Lipton, not about his craft, but about his sex life.Specifically, Lipton asked Sting about his infamous quote regarding "Tantric sex," in which he and his wife Trudie Styler allegedly had eight-hour lovemaking sessions.  Sting has since backpedaled, saying the whole thing was a joke, but in an advance clip from the episode, Lipton still insists he explain the audience of young people just what he meant."If we had seven hours, I would demonstrate," Sting said, to huge laughs and cheers.  "Maybe not. But there is some truth to it.  The idea of tantric sex is a spiritual act. I don't know any purer and better way of expressing a love for another individual than sharing that wonderful, I call it, 'sacrament.' I would stand by it.  Not seven hours, but the idea."He then quipped, "Seven hours includes movie and dinner," getting another round of laughs.Sting's appearance on Inside the Actors Studio, which airs Thursday night at 8 p.m. ET on Bravo, is mostly focused on the opening of his first Broadway musical The Last Ship.  He wrote the music for the show, which is based on his own childhood growing up in a shipbuilding town in the north of England.Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Pink, U2 & Bob Seger Debut Score Top-10 Debuts

RCA RecordsPink, recording under another name, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Bob Seger and U2, have all notched top-10 debuts with new albums on this week's Billboard Top 200 album chart.Seger's new album, Ride Out, enters at #3.  It's the 69-year-old Detroit rocker's highest-debuting album ever, and his highest rank on the chart since 1986. In at #4 is rose ave, the debut album from the musical duo You + Me.  The duo features Pink and Canadian singer/songwriter Dallas Green.  On her own, Pink has scored seven top-40 albums, while Green has scored two, under his usual musical moniker, The City and Colour. In a statement, Pink, who for this project is using her birth name of Alecia Moore, said, “We really had no intention for this to become what it is. We were just two friends getting together and doing what we love and I couldn’t be more proud of what we accomplished.” Green adds, "I am so very thankful for my friend Alecia and the beautiful music we've made together. We had no idea what would come of these songs and knowing that people are listening and loving it as much as we do is humbling.“As for U2, their much-maligned new album Songs of Innocence enters at #9.  While the album was downloaded 26 million times globally after the album was offered to iTunes users last month, those downloads were free, so they didn't count toward a chart position.  The album was made widely available for purchase last week and sold 28,000 copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan.  This is U2's first album since the release of 1987's The Joshua Tree not to debut in the top three. In at #10 is "Domino" singer Jessie J, with her second U.S. release, Sweet Talker. The #1 album on the chart is from country duo Florida Georgia Line, who scored a huge pop hit with "Cruise." This is their first #1 album on the general Billboard album chart, as opposed to the country album chart. It's worth noting that Sam Smith's debut album, In the Lonely Hour, has risen to #6 on a 53% sales gain, following his high-profile TV appearances on NBC's Today show and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Colbie Caillat Trying to Live the Message of Her Hit "Try," Wishes Others Would

ABC/Adam TaylorColbie Caillat's latest hit "Try" is a call for women to stop trying to mold themselves into a certain image or adopt certain behaviors so they'll fit in, be liked or be considered attractive.  While Colbie says she wrote the song as a message of empowerment to herself, she says she's happy to see that everyone can relate to it.  Take her appearance on ABC's Dancing with the Stars a couple weeks ago, for example.During the show, Colbie performed her hit "Try" while YouTube star Bethany Mota and her partner Derek Hough danced a routine inspired by the bullying that Bethany had to endure when she was younger.   "I loved it," Colbie says. "It meant so much to me because...Bethany's message, what she was trying to portray from what she's always felt her whole life, is something I've always felt, which is why I wrote the song 'Try.'  And now we're realizing that everyone has these self-confidence issues and personal insecurities and it starts when we're young."Colbie says even though she wrote the song, she still finds she has to take its message to heart every day.  "I'm learning to try not to try so hard, and to accept and embrace these things that I wish I could change or have always thought I could change," she says.Unfortunately, she says that some people close to her are still struggling with self-doubt."I have a really good friend...that right now...actually wants to get a nose job," Colbie reveals. "And it makes me so sad because I think she's beautiful the way she is. But she thinks someone is gonna like her better if it's fixed. And it's what we all do.""Try" is featured on Colbie's new album Gypsy Heart, in stores now.Follow @ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Taylor Swift Debuts New Song, "Style," in Latest Target Ad

Credit: Sarah BarlowYou may have seen paparazzi photos of Taylor Swift a few months ago, walking around in New York City holding a bunch of balloons?  Well, turns out she wasn't on her way to a birthday party: she was filming her new commercial for Target.  The spot, which just debuted, also features about thirty seconds of a brand-new Taylor song, called "Style."In the spot, Taylor is seen in various New York City locales, and speaks about what she finds inspirational about living in the Big Apple.  "Everything from what people are wearing on the street to the way they're interacting with each other," she says. "To...drive through the West Village at night and you see a couple kissing on the street or you see someone fighting outside their apartment...you see so much humanity on a daily basis that even if you're not inspired by your own life that day, you can be inspired by someone else's life."As for "Style," it's an upbeat tune, in which Taylor sings, "You've got the long hair slicked back, white t-shirt/And I got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt/And when we go crashing down, we come back every time/Because we never go out of style, we never go out of style.""Style," which some speculate was inspired by former beau Harry Styles, is on Taylor's new album, 1989, due out Monday.Follow --ABCNewsRadio!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio
