Gavin DeGraw Initially Thought Releasing His New Best-Of Album Meant His Career

James Minchin III/RCA RecordsGavin DeGraw's been making records for more than ten years now, so it's not surprising that his record company approached him to put together a greatest hits compilation: Finest Hour: the Best of Gavin DeGraw arrives in stores Tuesday.  But Gavin says initially, he didn't like the idea, because he thought it meant his career was over.Gavin tells ABC News Radio, "It's so funny, you know, when it was proposed to me, the idea....'Uh, hey, how do you feel about a best-of record?' I said, 'Umm, isn't that for when you're done making albums at the end of your career?'"But he says they persuaded him that it was the right thing to do by spinning it in a different way."They said, 'You can perceive it that way, but the issue is: How do you feel about being able to sum up your career so far -- to give a new audience the opportunity to hear a collection of your music that you personally picked for them -- and also have the opportunity to put a few new songs on there that your current fan base can check out?'"  Gavin recalls his record label telling him. "So I said, 'You know what? Since you phrase it that way, I like the idea!' So I went for it."Finest Hour features three new songs, and Gavin says that while he's in the process of working on his next record, the album gives him the opportunity to give his fans something to tide them over."I thought it was a really good opportunity to get some new material out there, give me a little bit of time to write another new album as well and to introduce my music to people who haven't heard my music before," he tells ABC News Radio. "To give them an idea of the type of music that I make. So they can get a little bit of an idea so they can go, 'You know what? I like it!' or 'I don't like it. I don't like this guy!'"The disc features songs from every phrase of Gavin's career, from "I Don't Want to Be," "Follow Through" and "In Love with a Girl," to "Not Over You," "Soldier" and "Best I Ever Had."  Gavin says, "I look back now at this little chunk of material. I'm thinking, 'Wow, that's crazy. I remember the phone call I had that inspired that story, to go and write that song,' so there's certainly a tremendous amount of nostalgia there."But the nostalgia is tempered by the three new songs: the current single "Fire," the song "You Got Me," from the recent film Dolphin Tale 2, and "Not Our Fault," which Gavin co-wrote with none other than One Direction's Harry Styles.  Asked if he'd work with Harry again, Gavin tells ABC News Radio, "I definitely would. I think that Harry is really talented. You know, I was really impressed with him.""He's a greatly successful guy, and he's successful at a very young age, and I think that he's going to have other success beyond what is the standard pop success. I really do," adds Gavin. "I think he's good enough to sustain it."Now that the best-of is being released, Gavin says it makes him realize that his career isn't over at all: In fact, it's far from it."Honestly, I know it's called 'The Best Of,' it's a best-of album, but, I feel like I'm just getting started," he says. "It's all just really starting right now." Follow @ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Sheryl Crow Finds Buyer for $12 Million L.A. Compound

Interscope RecordsFor the past two years, Sheryl Crow has been singing "All I Wanna Do...is sell my multi-milliondollar compound in L.A."  Now, she finally has.AOL's Real Estate blog reports that the Grammy-winner initially listed the property in the Hollywood Hills for just under 16 million bucks back in 2012, but took it off the market in 2013 when no buyer could be found.  It came back on the market again this past April for the "bargain" price of $11,950,000 and now she's found a buyer. Why is the property so expensive?  Because it's made up of three houses that sit on 10 acres and total over 10,000 square feet.  Sheryl bought each home separately around 1998 and then combined them.  Together, the three homes have 11 bedrooms, 8 1/2 baths, a library, wine cellar, chef's kitchen, music room and more.   The property also includes trails, a campsite, a playground and an infinity pool.According to AOL, Sheryl was also trying to sell another property in College Grove, Tennessee but that's now been taken off the market because it failed to find a buyer.  The singer's portfolio also includes an estate in Nashville, and a beachfront home in Florida.Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Taylor Swift Reveals First Song on "1989": "Welcome to New York"

Big Machine RecordsTaylor Swift has revealed the first track on her new album. "The first song on 1989 is a song called 'Welcome to New York,'" she explained on Monday's Good Morning America.  "And I wanted to start the album with 'Welcome To New York' because New York has been an important landscape and location for the story of my life in the last couple of years," Taylor said.Written by Taylor and Ryan Tedder,"Welcome to New York" is available tonight at midnight exclusively on iTunes, but only if you've pre-ordered 1989.  "Welcome to New York" follows the release of the singles "Out of the Woods" and "Shake It Off." Taylor said the Big Apple definitely inspired the track. "I dreamt about moving to New York, I obsessed over moving to New York and then I did it," Taylor said. "The inspiration that I found in that city is kind of hard to describe and hard to compare to any other force of inspiration I’ve ever experienced in my life.""It’s like an electric city and I approached moving there with such wide-eyed optimism and sort of saw it as a place of endless potential and possibilities and you can kind of hear that reflected in this music and in this first song especially," she continued.1989 will be officially released October 27.Follow @ABCNewsRadio!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Birthday Girl Katy Perry May Shame Betty Crocker Into Reinstating Her Favorite F

Capitol RecordsKaty Perry's turning 30 on October 25, but instead of pondering what reaching this milestone truly means to her life and career, she's preoccupied with making sure her birthday cake is perfect.  Luckily, the folks at Betty Crocker seem willing to reverse their product plan to make it happen."YO @BettyCrocker," Katy tweeted to the company on Saturday. "WHY WOULD U DISCONTINUE RAINBOW CHIP FROSTING? WHAT DA HECK AM I SUPPOSED 2 PUT ON MY FUNFETTI CAKE? HOW CAN I TURN 30 NOW?"It seems the company stopped making Katy's preferred rainbow chip frosting back in January, replacing it with rainbow sprinkle frosting instead.  This has sparked outrage among die-hard fans of the original frosting -- they even set up a Facebook page demanding its reinstatement.  Others started a petition calling for the frosting to come back on the market, while prices for cans of the sweet, creamy treat soared on eBay.Of course, Betty Crocker isn't about to ignore the wishes of a global pop superstar who had a hit with a song called "Birthday" and made a lyric video for the tune featuring nothing but cakes, candy, frosting, sprinkles and cupcakes."Katy! One more week! Bringing the RC Frosting back is definitely being explored," the company tweeted back to Katy, adding, "[Direct message] us. We'd like to send you a Bday gift!"Stay tuned: Betty Crocker has until Saturday to make Katy's birthday cake wishes come true.Follow @ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Can Taylor Swift Move a Million...Again?

Big Machine RecordsTaylor Swift's last two albums -- Speak Now and Red -- both sold over a million copies in their first weeks of release.  That's an almost unheard-of feat these days -- and one that any artist, including Taylor herself, is unlikely to repeat.Billboard reports that digital sales are down 11.5% for the first nine months of 2014, and initial sales projections of her new album, 1989, due October 27, have been revised downward.  They were initially projected at 1.1 million, which would be just about equal to what Red and Speak Now sold in their first weeks.  Now, Billboard says, the projections are closer to 750,000.A top retail sales executive tells Billboard, "I don’t know if anybody can do it, except maybe Adele," adding, "I was shocked that Justin Timberlake came so close."  Justin's album The 20/20 Experience sold 968,000 copies in its first week last year.  Adele's next album won't be out until 2015, by which time the music landscape will no doubt have changed again. However, a senior Nashville executive tells Billboard, "If anyone can still do it, Taylor can. But it will be very difficult, even for her.”Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Celebrity Real Estate: Lady Gaga's Buying, John Legend Is Selling

ABC/Rick PowellLady Gaga's a dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker, but apparently, she's also a California girl.  TMZ reports that the star has just dropped $24 million on a huge mansion in Malibu.Sources tell TMZ that the home sits on six acres, and features his-and-hers walk-in closets, a pool, gym, wine cellar, bowling alley, bocce ball court, a stable big enough for eight horses and even a "safe room."If you're looking for someplace a bit more modest in La La Land, though, you may want to check out John Legend's house.  He and his wife, model Chrissy Teigen, are selling their L.A. home for $1.995 million.According to The Wall Street Journal, the house includes three bedrooms, including one that was converted into a studio, where Legend wrote and recorded songs for his Love in the Future album. The couple purchased it as a second home in 2007; their primary residence is in New York City.  But now, according to John, they feel it's a bit too small.“We’re ready to expand a little bit," Legend says. “If we could have the twice-as-big version of this place, we would get it. We love the feel of this home.” He personalized the house by inscribing lyrics from his songs on a light fixture.Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Donald Trump Tweets to Katy Perry, Calls Her Ex-Hubby a "Loser" and "Dummy"

ABC/Randy HolmesApparently because Donald Trump seems to consider himself an expert on, well, everything, he's taken it upon himself to inform Katy Perry that she must have been crazy to marry Russell Brand.Since the two got divorced quite a while ago, it's odd that Trump would comment on their marriage now, but apparently, watching Brand on TV recently spurred him into action."I watched Russell Brand...on the @jimmyfallon show the other night—what the hell do people see in Russell—a major loser!" Trump tweeted, adding, "@katyperry must have been drunk when she married Russell Brand – but he did send me a really nice letter of apology!"Trump didn't explain the "letter of apology" part -- and he also was wrong about Brand appearing on the Fallon show: Brand appeared on several shows this past week, but not that one.  But never mind that -- Trump was on a roll.He then tweeted directly to Perry: "Katy, what the hell were you thinking when you married loser Russell Brand. There is a guy who has got nothing going, a waste!"  He then sent her another tweet, saying, "I watched Russell Brand and I think his mind is fried - he looks really bad. Russell is a total joke, a dummy who is lost!"Russell, meanwhile, wasn't going to take this lying down.  He responded, "are you drunk when you write these tweets? Or does that foam you spray on your bald head make you high?"  He added, "I don't think your daddy left you any witty ripostes, and everything you have you inherited."  He followed that with links to unflattering articles about The Donald, including one that called him a "deadbeat."Katy, however, stayed above the fray. MAGIC! Frontman Reveals How Ex Who Inspired "Rude" Feels About Song

Chapman Baehler/RCA Records"Rude," the chart-topping hit by the Canadian reggae-pop band MAGIC!, tells the romantic story of a guy who is so in love with his girlfriend that he's willing to defy her father and "marry her anyway."  But the song was actually inspired by MAGIC! frontman Nasri's ex-girlfriend, who was being so mean to him one night that he wrote a song about her behavior.Asked if his ex knows that she inspired the lines "Why you gotta be so rude/Don't you know I'm human too?," Nasri tells ABC News Radio, "Yeah, yeah, she definitely knows.  We were together when I was making a lot of the MAGIC! album."  OK, so how does she feel about the fact that her shoddy treatment of him resulted in a #1 hit?"I think she's happy with another man right now," laughs Nasri. "I think she's happy for us: we're all still friends."After, Nasri came up with those lines, the band's guitarist told him to turn it into a song, but he had no interest in writing it.  However, after his co-writer suggested he make the song about something happy, Nasri says he literally banged out the song in 15 minutes.  "Yeah, once I got into the new vibe, it just came right out: the whole story," he says of the track. While the song is now considered to be romantic, Nasri points out that the chorus has now become a way of expressing the initial emotion that he was trying to get out in the song: dismay at how mean his girlfriend was being to him."I think people also are latching onto the other side of it, where if somebody says something mean, they're like, 'Why you gotta be so rude,'" he says. "So the lyrics are taking on a life of its own and becoming almost like a sentence in pop culture and the American tongue."Nasri's right: "Why you gotta be so rude" has become quite the online meme, with that slogan captioning photos of, among other things, Jesus, James Van Der Beek, dogs, stick figures and movie characters.MAGIC! will kick off a huge tour with Maroon 5 in February.Follow @ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Sting told Fallon it's been a challenge."I think it's the most difficult thing I've ever tackled, telling a story with songs," Sting explained, noting that the musical took "five years of extraordinarily hard work" to come to fruition. The Last Ship tells the story of a family's struggle to survive the decline of the shipbuilding industry during the 1980s in Wallsend, a community in northeastern England where Sting was born and grew up.  The musical is currently in previews at the Neil Simon Theatre and officially opens October 25.The interview concluded with the British rocker having a little fun with Fallon and singing popular cell phone ringtones.Sting also recorded an outgoing voicemail message to the tune of the Police's "Message in a Bottle" for an audience member, picked at random.Later in the show, Last Ship cast member Rachel Tucker joined others from the musical for a performance of the song "If You Ever See Me Talking to a Sailor."  Follow @ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio
