Grammy Eligibility Ends Today...So Who'll Get Nominations?

Courtesy of The Recording AcademyWhen Taylor Swift's album 1989 comes out October 27, it may set the charts, and the cash registers, on fire, but it won't be receiving a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.  That's because the cutoff for eligibility for the 57th Annual Grammy Awards is today, September 30.  So any music that was released between October 1, 2013 and today can be nominated, but Taylor will miss out.  So, who are the most likely candidates for Grammy love? Billboard has a roundup. In the Album of the Year category, Billboard says Beyonce's self-titled surprise album has a good shot, while other possible contenders might include Ed Sheeran's X, Ariana Grande's My Everything, Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour, Katy Perry's PRISM and Pharrell Williams' G I R L.For Record of the Year, Billboard says Idina Menzel's Frozen anthem "Let It Go," Pharrell's "Happy," Taylor's "Shake It Off," Sam Smith's "Stay with Me," Beyonce's "Drunk in Love" and Coldplay's "A Sky Full of Stars" might make the cut.For Song of the Year, which is a songwriting award, "Stay with Me" is a contender, as is "Sing" by Ed Sheeran, "All of Me" by John Legend, Sia's "Chandelier," Beyonce's "Drunk in Love" and possibly Iggy Azalea's "Fancy."Sam Smith is a no-brainer when it comes to a Best New Artist nod, according to Billboard, and Iggy Azalea might also make the cut.  By the way, U2's free iTunes album Songs of Innocence has been ruled eligible for nominations, but the publication doesn't think the Academy will show Bono and the boys much love. The 57th Annual Grammy Awards will be handed out February 8 and air live on CBS.  Nominations are usually announced in December.Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Gwen Stefani to Debut New Single on "The Voice"

Art Streiber/NBCSure, The Voice offers a chance for undiscovered talent to get major exposure, but it also offers a chance for the show's coaches to push their latest projects.  Case in point: Gwen Stefani. Gwen's manager tells Billboard that the No Doubt frontwoman will select what will be the lead track from her forthcoming solo album -- her first in eight years -- and she'll perform that tune on The Voice later this season.  Gwen is currently working on the album in Miami with her fellow coach Pharrell Williams. However, according to Billboard associate chart director Gary Trust, that song's already been determined.  He tweeted that a new single from Gwen called "Baby Don't Lie" will arrive October 14.Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Kelly Clarkson's First Hit was Neil Patrick Harris' Wedding Song

Monty Brinton/CBS Kelly Clarkson's first hit, "A Moment Like This," provided a special moment at Neil Patrick Harris' recent wedding. As the actor recounted Monday night on The Late Show with David Letterman, his pal Elton John performed at his wedding to David Burtka in Italy earlier this month, but it wasn't Elton who played the song the couple had their first dance to.   "He introduced our first dance, which was super-fun," said Harris.  "And our first dance was....do you know Kelly Clarkson's 'A Moment like This?'"  "Oh, do I!" Letterman replied, getting a huge laugh.Harris then continued, "We loved American Idol season one, we were Team Kelly, and that was always kind of our song.  So we started dancing to it and we had it planned: we had a firework guy, and so when the song crescendos....fireworks are supposed to go off!  Very exciting, right?  But we're in a tiny town in Italy, so I'm figuring like, the local fireworks dude, I don't think he's gonna be exactly timed to the second....but sure enough, it happened perfectly!"As Harris showed off a photo of the moment, Letterman cracked, "Take that, Clooney!"So far, Kelly hasn't responded to Harris' anecdote.Follow --ABCNewsRadio!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Colbie Caillat Reveals Her "Gypsy Heart" Today

Republic RecordsOver the summer, Colbie Caillat released a five-song EP introducing fans to some of the new songs that would appear on her upcoming album Gypsy Heart.  Now, the full album has arrived, and Colbie says its title reflects different sides of her musical personality, and the different sides of her, as well.First, Colbie says Gypsy Heart sums up the dual nature of her personality: she's not able to settle on one or the other. "You know, I can never make a decision," she tells ABC News Radio. "I love being in Hawaii but I love coming to New York.  Like, I love being in Hawaii, wearing a bathing suit, no makeup; and I love being in New York, wearing gorgeous outfits that my stylist picked out for me and having really cool hair and makeup done.  It's fun.  So I think it's something I always battle with myself...which version of me am I gonna be today?"Musically, Colbie says, "I wrote 60 songs [for the project], so half of them are more, like, very produced and more pop-sounding. And I wanted to combine them, and to me, that sums up Gypsy Heart:  It's a love for all things and all styles."The reason Colbie had 60 songs, half of which were pop-sounding and half that weren't, is because after she initially wrote and recorded an organic, folky-sounding album which she loved, her record company rejected it, and told her to go back into the studio and come up with more pop songs.  At first, she was devastated -- the experience inspired her latest hit, "Try" -- but she eventually ended up loving the tunes she came up with for Gypsy Heart.  Part of the reason was the fact that she worked with super-producer Babyface on both batches of songs."I had pigeonholed him into being one type of producer or songwriter and I don't know why," she tells ABC News Radio. "And when I had my first session with him, we wrote a folk song, and then the next song, we wrote, it's called 'Just Like That,' and it's a R&B pop song.""He can really produce any genre, and write any genre and his recording quality -- it sounds better than any song and any record I've ever made," she gushes. "So, he's my favorite!"As for what will become of all the songs that Colbie wrote and then scrapped, she says, "Some songs probably will never be heard, some songs I hope to give to other artists, and there are, I think, for sure, seven songs that I plan on releasing." She says she's not sure when we'll get them, but adds, "I'm sure they'll be out at some point, because I love them!" Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Phil Collins Explains Why His Planned Collaboration with Adele Fell Apart

Lauren Dukoff/Atlantic RecordsA while back, everyone got very excited at the news that Adele had reached out to Phil Collins to work on some music for her eagerly-awaited next album.  But when it finally comes out, Phil says, it won't have that collaboration on it.  Turns out Adele's life just got a bit too busy for them to connect.Speaking to the Daily Mail's Event magazine, Phil says that he wasn't familiar with Adele when she first reached out to him, because, he says, he'd had a drinking problem and was a bit out of it, as far as what was going on, music-wise.  But he agreed to meet her, and the two got together in a hotel in London a year ago. "She played me a piece of music, and said, 'What do you think?'” recalls Phil. "I felt a bit on the spot...[but] it was great. Her idea was for me to finish it off. There were a few lyrics."However, Phil explains, "I found her a little elusive. First of all, after we’d met, I didn’t hear from her for a little while.  And I thought I’d failed the audition -- which is fair enough. You need to see if you’re compatible. She’s young, I’m 63. It could have been that, and any one of another hundred things.  But she said, “Oh no, no, no, no, no, I love what you do, I really want to do it…' So I thought, 'OK, well, she’s very keen, and she’s very sweet.'” So Phil says he spent a few weeks mulling over the music Adele had given him, and he still didn't hear anything. "I eventually emailed her back -- I didn’t have a phone number -- and I said, 'Are you waiting for me, or am I waiting for you?'” he recalls. "And she said, 'Well, actually, I’m not writing at the moment -- I’m moving house.' And she’d got the new baby. So that was the end of it."Still, Phil says Adele is a "a very nice lady" who is "certainly talented."  "This piece of music, maybe I’ll hear it on the record," he adds. "I’ve still got it and I don’t know if she’s used it. So it was a bit of a non-starter."Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Maroon 5: "We Don't Really Care If Fans Pay for Our Music"

Peter Kramer/NBCWhen your favorite band puts out a greatest hits record, it's annoying to be expected to purchase the same songs you already have again, right?  Well, Maroon 5 feels your pain: not only do they plan on charging less for their future best-of, but they think it's cool if fans decide not to pay for any of their music, period.Speaking to the U.K. website Digital Spy, Adam Levine says, "If our next record is a Greatest Hits record, we may write a few original songs and put them on there, and maybe we'll only charge what it would cost for the new songs, and make it an inexpensive album. Why would somebody have to buy a Greatest Hits if they already have those songs?"Adam insists that Maroon 5 wouldn't even mind giving away all their music for free, like U2 did with their most recent album, Songs of Innocence."We don't really care if our fans pay for our music...I think our agenda as a band is getting our music to as many people as possible," he explains. "I literally don't care how they support us, as long as they do. If you love a band and want to hear their music, obtaining it for free is okay with us. If they're compensating in some way like buying a T-shirt or a ticket is important to us, but as far as the music is concerned...""We're in the position to do that," adds guitarist James Valentine, who admits he was a "little jealous" of U2's free album stunt. "I do worry about up-and-coming artists, and how they're struggling to make ends meet, to get support and make a living. But for us, I'd love for everyone on the planet to have our music."Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

"The Voice" Recap: All Four Coaches Turn Around for Blind Singer

Image Courtesy Trae Patton/NBCNBC's The Voice entered its second week of blind auditions on Monday night. Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams continued to battle for artists to add to their respective teams. Here are the highlights of the two-hour episode:John Martin, 25, drives a forklift in a warehouse -- not your typical occupation for an artist on this show. He sang Amos Lee's "Sweet Pea," convincing Blake, Gwen and Pharrell to turn around. Blake enjoyed his laid-back approach. Gwen described John's voice as "delicious" and "creamy." Adam begrudgingly admitted that Blake might be the right fit for John. Sure enough, John picked Blake.Jessie Pitts took on Brandi Carlile's "The Story." Gwen pressed her button right away, and Blake later followed suit. Blake, who's married to fellow country singer Miranda Lambert, pointed out that "The Story" was his wedding song. Blake's story apparently didn't sway Jessie, though; she chose Gwen.Sixty-two-year-old Michael Stein is a cantor, or, in his words, a "minister of music." He brought along his violin for a rendition of the Charlie Daniels Band's "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." Unfortunately for him, none of the coaches expressed interest in him.   Pharrell and Blake both made a bid for Ricky Manning, who sang John Newman's "Love Me Again." Ricky opted to join Team Pharrell.Kelli Douglas, a 31-year-old single mom from Dallas, covered "Danny's Song" by Loggins and Messina. All of the coaches except for Pharrell pursued her. Adam detected that Kelli was nervous, but he vowed to work with her on that, if given the opportunity. Blake noted that there were some Texas-like qualities in her voice, such as her "quick breaks." Kelli joined Adam's team.Blessing Offor, a blind man who lives in Brooklyn, played Bill Withers' "Just the Two of Us" on the keyboard. In the final moments of the performance, all four coaches turned around. Gwen said Blessing's voice was similar in tone to Pharrell's. The "Happy" singer replied his fellow coach was being "super-kind." Pharrell told Blessing, who's spent time in Nashville, he can teach him how to mix genres. Blessing went with Pharrell.Troy Ritchie enticed Gwen to press her button with his version of "Out of My League" by Fitz and the Tantrums. The No Doubt singer pointed out that she doesn't have a lot of men on her team.Mia Pfirrman had her choice of all four coaches after she belted out the Katy Perry hit "Unconditionally." Adam told her there were some really spectacular moments in her performance, but her voice needed a little bit of refining. Gwen said she would love to work with her on another song and see what she can become as an artist. Gwen won't get that opportunity, though, because Mia settled on Adam.Blake added Bree Fondacaro to his crew after she sang Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe." Anita Antoinette, who previously auditioned during season three, was back for redemption. She closed the show with some reggae -- her take on Bob Marley's "Turn Your Lights Down Low." All four coaches vied for her talent. Pharrell told Anita he can help her accomplish her goal of making music that touches people. Gwen complimented the way Anita can blend styles. Adam said Anita can accomplish anything she wants. Anita landed on Gwen's team.At the moment, Pharrell has eight artists on his team, Gwen and Blake have seven artists each, and Adam has six artists. The coaches will hear from more hopefuls Tuesday night at 8 p.m. Eastern time.Follow @ABCNewsRadio!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Annie Lennox Says Touring's for Men, Not Women; Calls Beyonce "Feminism Lite"

Credit: Mike OwenAnnie Lennox considers herself a feminist, and is a staunch advocate for women's rights, but she admits that men and women aren't equal when it comes to one particular aspect of a musician's job: touring.Speaking to Billboard, Annie says, "I'm not being sexist when I say this, but it suits the man's life more. When you're a woman and want to have a family...I never liked being away from my kids. I don't think it's healthy. I don't think I can hack that way of life like I used to."A comment like that, however, doesn't mean that Annie can't criticize other female artists for not truly understanding what it means to be a feminist.  Speaking to the website PrideSource, she dismisses Beyonce's claim to feminism -- Bey performed at the MTV VMAs in front of a huge screen that read "FEMINIST," after all -- as "feminist lite.""I'm sorry. It's tokenistic to me," Annie explains. "I mean, I think she's a phenomenal artist -- I just love her performances -- but I'd like to sit down [with her]. I think I'd like to sit down with quite a few artists and talk to them. I'd like to listen to them; I'd like to hear what they truly think.  I see a lot of it as them taking the word hostage and using it to promote themselves, but I don't think they necessarily represent wholeheartedly the depths of feminism.""I think for many it's very convenient and it looks great and it looks radical, but I have some issues with it," she adds. "Of course I do. I think it's a cheap shot."Annie's new album Nostalgia arrives on vinyl on Tuesday and in all other formats on October 21.  Asked if this truly will be her final album, as she's hinted, Annie tells PrideSource she's not sure, but there certainly doesn't seem to be much place in our culture for a female pop singer who's nearly sixty."I actually think that people are so powerful and interesting -- women, especially -- when they reach my age. We've got so much to say, but popular culture is so reductive that we just talk about whether we've got wrinkles, or whether we've put on weight or lost weight, or whether we've changed our hair style," she explains."I just find that so shallow. Because it's a shallow place, it's one of the reasons the music industry and the music scene is really not truly for me and never really has been."Follow --ABCNewsRadio !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio
